Review of Goosebumps

Goosebumps is a horror based thriller series of short novels for 8-12 years old children. Written by R.L. Stine, published by Scholastic, there are many books in the series. We read the books as a part of BookMonsters summer club and here is what kids think:

Samay found the book full of fantasy, high on adventure and low on horror. He found the beginning part interesting and felt that he couldn't sustain his interest due to lack of graphics. The comprehension of horror required vivid imagination of yucky stuff, which was difficult to do without pictures to relate to. He rated the book 4 stars and said that younger kids shouldn't read it.

Misha didn't like the book. The idea that Horrorland was an amusement park with many rides caught her attention. She found the fantasies mentioned in the book as lovely and not horrible. The book failed to convery horror to her. She was more interested in reading about the author and found out that Mr. Stine lives in New York with his wife and has a spaniel.

Nayana couldn't find any element of horror throughout the book. She felt it came towards the end but by then she had lost interest in the book and couldn't finish reading it. It was more like an adventure book. She hoped that there would be some horror element in it to honor the genre it claimed to belong to. She felt young adults would definitely find it boring.

Geordie found out a typical writing style in the book. He found that his book had chapters and towards the end of each chapter something sinister and mysterious would happen, forcing the reader to read further. He also found that stories got boring at places and just when the boringness reached a peak, something very interesting happened. He liked this way of writing and felt it was a good read. But he opined that not many people would appreciate this way of writing.

Abhiram found it full of fantasy and adventure. He noticed maps and graphics at the end of the book and felt that there should have been more pictures to support the story. In his book, he liked the part where a character became a giant and another character became invisible. Like Geordie, he too liked the author's writing style of creating and maintaining suspense intermittently. He rated the book 4 stars.
